progI should be writing a "column" (actually a section for Book) now but, meh meh meh. I'd walk to the diesel and do it if it twernt raining.
The Morgudlians went shopping today. Cricket's hard drive started reporting surface errors, so we hit the MIT flea to seek a replacement. Really nothing there, though I picked up a cheap USB cable and M bought an ancient and (literally) moldy tome called "The Boys' and Girls' Guide to Electronics" or something similar, becuase it's got some great, scannable clipart-to-be in it.
Ended up getting a new drive at Micro Center. I bought a new iPod case & clip while I was there. I love the clip; it's a separate piece from the case, and attaches via a swivel, which should lead to far less stress on its plastic than Apple's cheapo model. It's definitely outlived its predecessor by several hours, so far.
The case features a transparent piece over the display and a simple hole over the iPod's control pad, letting you leave it in the case more or less permanently. Nice, becasue after two weeks the thing's already bearing the sorts of surface scuffs you'd expect from being stuffed into and yanked out of pockets and backpack repeatedly. Still, I hesitate at the thought that any stranger on the subway will be able to learn what I'm listening to by reading the text scrolling across my hip. I guess I will learn not to care.
And, I didn't follow up about Hilary Scott's 9/11 sculpture. It's OK... a block of polished stone with an abstract wing shape on top made of copper or a similar metal. "Modest", just like the press release said. I question how words like SERVICE and COMMUNITY and so on are stamped into the metal at apparently arbitrary points. Kind of hokey.
