I was bored last night so I took up an invitation to LinkedIn that [livejournal.com profile] jtroutman sent me in January, and set up a profile there. I ignored the invitation initially, figuring that LinkedIn was just another Orkut-like thing that some segment of my nerdy adult friends were having a microfad over - see how many pokemon experience points connections you can collect! - but since the start of the year I've gotten the impression that the site has actually earned a fairly decent rep as a useful resource for professionals, especially those who do need to network at least occasionally.

I commenced to bombard invitations at people until I was too sleepy to keep at it. If you didn't get one and wish to be part of my scintillating business network just say so. (Or invite me via the thingy.)

The only Orkut friend-requests I get these days are from random Brazilian girls. I go to their pages and all their friends seem to be Brazilian too, so I have no clue. Do you get these too?

It has come to my attention that Orkut is invitation-only, so if I want to see more friends on the network, and they're not already part of it, I have to use their little invitation system. But I don't want to spam my friends for the sake of a silly social toy...

Grunt. OK: I might send out a few seed invitations to a handful of you. I figure either you'll use them and then do the rest of my work for me (dragging in the people we know in common), or you won't, saving us all from silly social toydom. In either case you can beat me up for giving your email address to a website. Enjoy.

OK, I joined Orkut. I hesitated because the BoingBoing people have been making fun of it, and apparently I must do everything Cory and Xeni tell me to do. So [livejournal.com profile] dougo invited me to it, and I said "meh". Then [livejournal.com profile] jjohn invited me to it, and... I still said "meh", but I clicked on the link in his invitation email and saw all these familiar and friendly ORA faces smiling back at me. Yes, sigh, OK. It's all for research, right? Finger on the pulse! The sacrifices we make.

You can go join if you want, and add me as a friend, if appropriate (I'm there under my real name and email address and so on). I dunno if I will ever send out any email invitations because, yes, "meh". Dunno if I'll ever fill out that personals-style information, either. Meanwhile, have been adding myself to 9,999,999 communities, which in some cases seem to have hundreds more members than their LiveJournal counterparts. The Perl community, for example, has 458 members.

But if you search for "perl", an earlier hit is for "I Hate Perl", with 2 members. And the first hit for "board games" is for a community called "bi poly kinky pagan gamer geek", which is almost exactly a local friend's summary description of the typical member of a certain local social circle, so I had to say har-d-har. (Friend is going nameless here to prevent incorrect association by proximity, ho ho.)
