You should make a point of buying DVDs of a couple of shows you really like, though, to support them making more, and to force^h^h^h^h^h enable all your friends to watch them.
When you have cash again, will you buy dvds or other chatchkes related to your favorite shows? That's much more direct and useful support of the shows then giving money to the cable company and tivoing over ads anyway. It's also the model of the future, as only the bbs has figured out, which is why the bbs will be the Winner in the New World.
The BBS? Are you mistyping "BBC" or do you mean the INTARWEB BBS or huh?
I will likely buy DVDs and stuff anyway, because even if I bought one or two a month I'd still be saving money, I reckon. (He said, before calling RCN and seeing what they can actually do for him. He hates talking to the salesweasels at RCN. jmac is a twitching field mouse before them.)
I'm a little softheaded about the whole good/bad thing when it comes to downloading shows or anything like that ... If I have to, I usually only get shows that are not on currently or offered on DVD. If it is rerunning, then, I won't.
I know that some people say it's not theft, not this, not that by definition, but the reality of the situation is that there are companies that are going after people for doing this, and it's enough that I keep it extremely curtailed.
Personally, I guess it boils down to ... using it to find something very specific and very focused, like you want to watch THAT one show from a long time ago that you liked, okay, fine ... but if you're going to replace your entire entertainment focus to just this model, I have a hard time thinking it would be kosher in my brain.
But, since you say you don't watch much TV anyway, maybe just chucking everything isn't a bad idea.
My problem is there isn't things on TV that I like when I'm awake. All the good stuff is on at times when I should be sleeping instead. Sigh. I really should consider that TiVo.
Whether you do or don't download stuff from the I-net, unsubscribe to cable television anyway. I went back to cable because a sibling thought it was a shame I wouldn't get the in-depth coverage of issues provided by watching television news but I've decided that I cannot possibly care about watching television news and I think he's wrong anyway. So I went back to no-cable a few years ago and I find ways to entertain myself. P.S. Outer Limits original series is available on (fiddle-)DVD.
I only know of it from arcades. Sooooo... a creature for my amusement. Prepare for battle! Is there no warrior mightier than I? You are starting to annoy me, creature. My destroyers will annihilate you!

Yes. "Canceling all TV service" would actually mean "minimizing all TV service" here. I have digital and HBO and other crap.
Of course it theoretically could mean "killing all cable and switching to DSL" but that's probably not an option since DSL still probably totally sucks in this neighborhood. It did as recently as a year and a half ago, anyway.
I had internet access via my cable company at my previous place. The way they handled it was that if you had cable TV with them you pay the regular internet access fees -- but if you did NOT subscribe to cable TV as well you would pay an extra $10/month.
Minimal basic cable TV (local channels plus about 15 more) was only about $17/month. We figured for the extra $7/month we could use better local TV and those few extra channels .
Even my mighty TiVo lacks the ability to go back in time and record the first season of a show whose second season just started and, like, the New York Times and all my freinds are going LA LA LA about even though I hadn't even heard of it. There's at least three of these going on just this fall...
Another reason to keep cable television is if you have any interest in live events you can only get on cable. And really wouldn't want to watch when the chopped up DVD finally comes out, and would be annoying to get on torrent-added time delay.
Yes, I'm talking about sports.
For me, the interest is in the World Cup here which is split across the ESPNses and the other ABC stations. (I need to make sure I'm pre-approved for a flexible schedule next June...hmm.)
Boxing fans are almost required to have cable/satellite if you want to follow it at all.
Not really a reason to justify the expense if you aren't addicted to a cable-only sport however, but a situation that I don't see DVDs or bittorrent being able to fill adequately.
