I haven't signed the contract yet, but I'm nonetheless sitting in [livejournal.com profile] daerr's office. More miscommunication; the fellow who'll act as my main customer contact (the company itself being my customer) hasn't shown up yet or answered my email from yesterday so I don't have anything to do.

And of course the usual "first day at work" elation dissolves away because I'm not getting paid for this. If I were a bastard I'd bill for this time sitting around picking my nose, but I am not a bastard. I guess actually I should just go home if he doesn't appear in the next hour or so. But, whatev; it's nice to be very quite almost in a money-earning state again. Nearly.

I'd bill for it. I don't think that makes me a bastard, although I confess opinions differ on that.

I work for money, and my time is inherently valuable to me. If I'm somewhere I would not otherwise be at someone else's behest for the purposes of a job, it is billable time.

Thirded. They won't value professionals unless professionals make them.

Agree! If they asked you to be there, then it is billable time. The company you are working for pretty much has more money than they know what to do with.

When you are eating ramen while waiting for them to process your first invoice (which I cynically say will take 45 days from the date of invoice for them to pay), you will not be feeling so charitable.

Did they tell you to show up at this time?

The status as of Thursday was "Show up anytime and get started." Yesterday the contact emailed me and asked me when I thought I'd start; I replied to say I'd like to wander in the following morning. So I did, though there was no further mail.

I say bill them. If they pay no penalty for miscommunicating they have no incentive to improve.

GUILTY!

It took me a moment to get that because I just woke up, but your comment is certifiably AWESOME.
