Golden Compass is getting knocked by critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Even generally positive reviews (like the one in the Globe today) are calling it badly paced, feeling more like it's rushing through the book's story rather than adapting it. This is the reason I took a pass on seeing the most recent Potter pic, and I am not likely to bother with this one either. Too bad.

I was surprised when the Junkie told me about the bad reviews. Nate and I saw it Saturday night and both really liked it. It was super fun! Visually it was really appealing, and I thought the characters were pretty fun, too. Nate liked it so much he already requested the book from the library.

Neither of us had read any of the books, so that may have contributed to the enjoyment. We went in with no preconceived notions. There were definitely places where I felt like I wanted more backstory, but I knew that reading the book would eventually provide it.

I dunno, but it seemed pretty cool to me. Definitely worth seeing in the theater.
