I am totally in-line for a new iPhone when Apple lifts the expected veil on the device's second generation next month. My little Sony Ericsson brick is four years old, covered in interfaces that nobody supports any more, and works so spottily that I've been asking clients who wish to have a voice meeting if we could use Skype instead. I tell them that I'm holding out for the new iPhones, rather than just picking up a replacement. They understand.

Hm... I actually told myself (and anyone in earshot) from the start that I'd be in as soon as it hit its first major revision, so in that way I'm kind of pleased with myself for holding out so long.

I'm hoping that they have EDGE in conjunction with 3G on the next generation. If you're in urbanica, you're fine with 3G, but step anywhere that looks remotely rural, you're outta luck and EDGE is all you have.

AT&T is still evil, but with my job search, I've learned how important of a tool that Visual Voicemail actually is.

I used to think that the true sign of an Apple fanatic was whether or not they bought an iPhone the minute they went on sale last year. I now say it's going to be anyone who already bought an iPhone and now wants to upgrade to the new model. Me, I plan to run mine into the ground before I replace it.

and, the opposite of an apple fanatic: the local newswoman who was reporting on the store opening this week and pronounced "macbook" mikBOOK rather than MAKbook. i was like, um, it's not a mcnugget....

Alternatively, she thought it was the Scottish computer. But in that case she shouldn't have said its name.

I heard about one person who spoke the name of the Scottish computer right before upgrading it to Leopard...

oooh, yeah, cheap ones from other people.

I know that a certain college I used to work out will ALL upgrade theirs. I know that almost all the IT people who had Treo's slid over to the iPhone. They'll all do the upgrade thing again this fiscal too, I am sure.

That simply astounds me. And I'm a kookoo for Apple. But I told myself last year that it's rare to be able to purchase an Apple product within minutes of it going on sale, so I figured it was probably my only chance plus I was waiting for this thing forever, so why not wait for hours in a mall to get one? At least if you want one there should be a slew of them available from upgraders.

This college is just full of money anyway. Every year the new fiscal turns and half the IT staff or more just get the latest new smart phone. Since they're mostly Mac people anyway, they got a bunch of iphones with their budgets. Dropping $20k on iphones each year wouldn't phase them, I am sure. They did nearly that with Treos.

And yeah, upgraders should flood the market with v.1 iphones.

My private holdout point was "I'll buy an iPhone when the development kit comes out." And I did... which was stupid, on the one hand, because I have done exactly nothing with the devkit except download it. But I've enjoyed the heck out of Mr. Shiny these past three months, so I don't regret getting the v.1.

I am totally with you. I have been using a very retro old Nokia "brick" for the last 3 years, which has almost no features and the keys are all worn bare. I was originally holding off on getting an iPhone because I was worried about cellular reception issues in central Maine. Then I moved to a place where my current cell phone doesn't work AT ALL, and discovered the joys of PhoneTag, and figured out it didn't matter as much as I thought it did. I also found actual people with iPhones who didn't have much issue using them in the places where I would be during the day. Then I held off getting an iPhone at Christmas because I knew they would have a new model before this fall. Now I just have to afford it when it comes out.
