More things what happen
Sep. 26th, 2007 01:03 pmOther things I forgot in my description of last weekend:
Saturday attended that art salon in Union Square, which featured paintings and prints by
cthulhia (including her celebrated Surly Pink Bunny Tarot), poetry by Mary and recorder music performed by Carolyn. The funny thing was that I knew all of them were up to something but I didn't quite realize until the weekend itself that they were conspiring on the same event (and had been for months). It was altogether delightful, made moreso by the surprise of my boneheaded last-minute realization.
Here's Mary's Flickr set of it.
Friday entertained
lyricon and her dood as they passed through town en route to a friends' wedding in Vermont. We had yummy lunch at one of my favorite nearby restaurants, Porter Square's Passage to India, and had fun catching up and chatting through our respective grogginess, mine from cold medicine and theirs from Hawaii-to-Boston jet lag.
L's been a pen pal - there's really no better term for it - since we met online in 2000, over (what else) Looney Labs fan website administrivia. This was the first time we had actually ever met! Pretty good.
Had a very good Gameshelf shoot last night. I cross my fingers coz I haven't actually gone over the footage yet, but it went much more smoothly than April's shoot, and the crew already thinks it's the best work we've done. Some of the improvement was reacting to my list of criticisms from last time, but a lot also came from the fact that I scripted almost everything. We were able to film several takes of each bit and still wrap early.
The only completely unscripted bit was our do-over of the Joe-n-Jmac dialogue about the games, but I kept these to 5 minutes or less of raw footage each, mostly of Joe waxing on about the bits he liked. This was good because I'm worried that the episode is otherwise me talking and talking and talking so it's good to give Joe some time, and also in reviewing the March episode more recently I've decided that the weakest part of the show is the unscripted host dialogues. I still want them in there, but they shouldn't be longer than a minute or two, each. After that they're just dead boring, compared to the rest of the show.
I'm giving myself a deadline of, oh, October 15 to get this thing afloat. And in a beautiful world I'd like to have another whole ep done before the year's out, but let's talk about that when it's time.

Q: Something about post formatting policy.
A: If you can't write a Greasemonkey script to format other peoples' posts yourself, like me and all my friends can, go back to AOL, luser. Now if you'll excuse me I shall don my totally badass black trenchcoat and away to the Games Workshop store because I hear they just got a new shipment of Space Orks in. Waugh!
A2: LOL USE LUNIX
Commentary: The Slashdork effect. This is not surprising and there's probably not much to be done about it, but it's still disheartening to see. And I just know exactly when it will appear but I still must read the comments anyway.
Q: Something about local coffee houses.
A: Oh god don't go to the Diesel. Every time I go in there I get spat on by the staff and the clientele bludgeon me with their fashionable laptop accessories. I think it's because I'm so manly. I'm just not sure.
A2: Oh hell yes! Sometimes the Diesel workers call my mom up at home and harass her with their tattoos. It's awful!
Commentary: This, I just do not understand. Seriously, what? I'm just an ordinary slobby guy and I've been going there for years and have never picked up on any attitude. I'm kind of numb but I'm not that numb.
Ricky plans
May. 26th, 2007 07:12 pmI finally called Ricky back just now. He wants to come down for Art Beat this year. We went to only a little bit of 2005's (2006 being the Ricky-(and-art-)free Volity Year) but he has only good memories of it, as well as sadness that he didn't buy "that piece with the string". I don't remember this.
I do remember feeling a little antsy when he was trying to have a conversation with one seller about her stuff when it was clear that How much is this? was the only question she wanted to hear. Ricky does not pick up on these things. It is too bad that it makes me antsy, but it always does.
Anyway, he's how tentatively scheduled to be staying at my apt for that weekend. We will probably hit the MFA too so he can enjoy its courtyard, where he hasn't sat in a long time.
In other news, I finally cleaned my keyboard this afternoon. I didn't have the article author's specialized scrubby tool, but I did have a whole lotta Q-tips and some Windex, so I got most of the gross (and I do mean gross) matter off the base. His sandwich-baggie method of mass key-cleaning worked like a charm.
Sadly, as a fan and frequent user of mammalian skin and hair, it's bound to get all gunked up again soon enough unless I invest in a cover thingum.
karlvonl recommends this one. Maybe!
Also, the AC is up again. Whirrr. $$$$. eh

This looks like it might be worth my while to come to and bring some Jmac's Arcades. Anyone wanna come with? I feel antsy that I haven't made any in three months, even though I have the inspiration for the next one; the other pillars just win out in the continual fight over motivation. So this might give it a little boost.
Speaking of the automated dorkiness implied by the subject line,
xach strikes again with another wigflip toy, this one letting you make your own "lolcats"-style images without Photoshop. I started to show my appreciation by taking pictures he's posted of himself and his little son and putting I CAN HAS JUICEBOX or something on it but it didn't feel right, so I'll just talk about it here instead la bla.
Oh, and since it came up in conversation today: you have probably already seen loltrek, which I was amused to discover was by Stephen Grenade and some of the other interactive-fiction people I vaguely know. Good job, guys.

Davis cheap eats alert
Mar. 1st, 2007 10:34 amI just paid three dollahs even for a eggs & chorizo burrito and a coffee at the new Boloco, and now I am leeching off their wireless. That's a pretty good deal.
The burritos here are kind of anemic compared to the big fat burritos that my neighbor Tacos Lupita makes, but they're tasty. The coffee is tolerable. It's a nice cheap protein boost though, on a morning when I was expecting to laden myself down with a Diesel bagel.
(I'd post this in
davis_square but honestly I'd feel self-conscious about writing more posts about buildings and food there. Not that I don't enjoy the ones that others write. Anyway.)

So lately I've been eating things.
Feb. 12th, 2007 12:17 amLunch friday at that Indian cafe dealie in Inman Square. I cannot remember the name [It's Punjabi Dhaba - thanks
pheromone] but if I recall correctly they have a really colorful woo-woo-we're-hip sign out front. But the inside is all business, of the sort I most commonly associate with hole-in-the-wall Chinese or Italian joints. It's really cheap and good. The aloo mater I ordered for around $6 came in a large metal TV Dinner-style tray, which actually made for easy together-slopping of the rice and various fixins. I enjoyed it a great deal. I want to go back and get the same thing but have em throw in some garlic naan. Mm.
Later, breakfast at Supreme Kitchen, halfway up Highland Ave. Oddly I have never been there before. More oddly, it was not Soundbites-jammed on a Sunday late morning, though it was certainly turning some brisk business. I guess the nameless neighborhood around Somerville Hospital just doesn't have the visibility of Ball Square. Anyway, I had eggs n pancakes n snausage and it was all very good. I shall return.
Finally
classicaljunkie made a tremendous amount of chili yesterday and gave me a lot in a Pyrex container, which I have so far dropped only once. I am still eating it and will be for another day or two. It's great.

Octave Club
Jan. 22nd, 2007 04:09 pmI'm helping to crew tonight's Rock Candy Show taping. Only one band this time: Octave Club [noisy MySpace link]. As always it's free and open to the public, so come on by if you want to be blasted with some free live rock n roll in our cute lil TV studio.
The website says that taping starts at 7 and that's a damn lie because I just spoke to the director. It will probably be 8:30 or so.

Help Zarf move a fridge!
Jan. 4th, 2007 10:38 amIf you're big and strong and wish to help award-winning interactive fictionist, cheese wrangler, and monkey-fancier Zarf move into his new place in Medford, your presence is requested early Sunday afternoon in order to assist with the extraction of a fridge from its current owner's basement. I will have a Zipcar truck ready at curbside for subsequent transport.
There are promises of foods and entertainments and such for helpers. Please mail or comment if you can help. Thanks!

I take it black, but for the tears
Dec. 23rd, 2006 11:38 amI love the lovely coffee ladies of the Rossini's and Cumberland Farms morning shifts. They always have a smile for me, and in the case of Rossini's have a tall cup of sweet black warmth poured by the time I reach the counter, for they know me. I need only nod.
They are my radiant dark angels of good mornings.

The PMRP halloween show was delightful. Oh my goodness. I'm actually a little sorry I went to the second of the two shows, otherwise I'd more strongly insist that locals attend.
Talking to me afterwards,
audioboy was trying to avoid the word "improved" in summarizing where the group has come since last year, and I don't know why; it really has improved!
The execution was nearly flawless; there was a minor mic glitch that was fixed during the first intermission, and there was one mistimed sound effect during the last of the three acts, and that was all that I could tell. The soundscapes were great, and having three separate sound-effect crews for the three acts seemed to work out really well.
And the actors were all brilliant. Half I knew from Chicken Heart, and half were new to me, and all did a knock-down job. I expected nothing less from them, which is why I knew I'd love the show, but the whole of everything came together in a way that definitely exceeded my expectations.
(And there was an all-furry stagehand crew?! HALLOWEEN)
Anyway, my regret at not being a part of the show this year was mitigated by my delight at being able to enjoy it without having to spend the previous 6 weeks practicing for it. You all did a superb job and I eagerly await what PMRP plans next.

In less whiny news
Sep. 25th, 2006 12:37 amThe Stah Mahket Shaw's at Porter is open 24 hours again, just like it was when I first moved here nearly six years ago. This is a good thing. I just visited and bought some phoney-baloney bagels, which is better than no bagels at all, esp. since I v. much wanted a hot buttered bagel and didn't want to go to Dunkies for it. (Also discovered that Shaw's has a half-price bin for day-olds, but all it had it in was, like, bulkie rolls.)
I remember the staff being a little wacky this late, and it's once again true. Sadly they turn off the self-service lanes overnight so you have to interact with checkout clerks. Mine was wearing weird little sunglasses, and I wondered at first if he was blind, but it didn't seem so. Maybe he was a vampire. He really liked the brand of bagels I had chosen and talked at length about how much he loves to eat them straight out of the package, except then he has to wash his hands after. ?!.

Eternal September
Aug. 31st, 2006 06:05 pmI would like to randomly note that I am really pleased and impressed with the
davis_square community.
* Compared to certain 0ther c0mmunities I could name, this one has remained relatively free of fotoshop-fratboy snarkery. (Though to be fair I just peeked in on that other one and it doesn't look as obviously dopey as it has in the past. Dunno if that's a trend or not.)
* When trolls do attack, they catch like wet matches on damp wood.
* It's all-around drama-resistant. It did have a blowout a few months ago, but came out of it wiser, and maybe even improved.
There's no magic; it's the people in it that are great, and who have set down a culture that inspires continued coolness. As another school year starts and I see another round of young newcomers phasing themselves in fairly smoothly, I have to smile.

Freelancing again
Nov. 18th, 2005 10:44 amAt Wednesday's Gameshelf shoot, Director-Joe offered me a gig: he was directing a talk show for Somerville's municipal TV station the next morning, and needed camera help for an hour. So I did that, and the producer asked if I could come in this morning to shoot another talk show. Just got back from that.
I told the producer that I'd continue to welcome these little morning jobs. This is actually quite ideal for me right now. It pays well for only a little time invested, and since it's early in the morning it leaves the whole rest of the day open for Voilty work. Encourages me to get my ass out of bed at a reasonable time, too. Yay.
(This outfit is entirely separate from SCAT. It's a municipally funded and operated TV station, versus a public-access nonprofit. It also has a general theme to its programming, quite unlike SCAT, which lets any Somerville resident willing to pony up a $40 membership produce TV shows about whatever they want.)

Jul. 29th, 2005 06:45 pmGot the giant hard drive today. Installing it into the G5 (alongside the HD it already had) was a breeze. Am hwarfing all the current Gameshelf footage from earlier this month onto hard disk right now... it's too bad it can only do it at 1x speed, meaning that it will take several hours to transfer, with me manually swapping tapes every hour. But it will be so worth it, I think.
I wonder what the current state of hard-drive-using camcorders is. I am assuming they exist. I'd certainly favor using one over MiniDV.
Somewhat relatedly, did something fun last night: helped crew a debate in the SCAT studio between the Democratic candidates for the 2nd Middlesex district state senate race. You Somervudlians can catch it on Channel 3 at 7pm on any Wednesday in August (except for the 31st, I'm assuming, since that's a day after the election in question). When you see the camera trained on Casey or Callahan, that was my masterful handiwork, ha ha. (Another camera was on Jehlen and Mackey, and a third on the moderator/audience.)
I wasn't really paying attention to what they were saying (since I was paying more attention to what I was doing), but two big topics I noticed were gay marriage and T expansions into Somerville. I'm interested in hearing about that latter topic in particular, so I'll be tuning in myself.
It'll also be shown on Medford, Winchester and Woburn local access, but I dunno when. "Check your local listings." Hm, if I remember I'll post something about it to
davis_square next week.
Screwing around with Apple hardware? Being part of the media coverage for a local political event? It's like 1996 all over again for me...
