Anyone interested in writing some Volity games? We turned a corner last weekend, and everything suddenly became scalable and realistic all at once... foomp, was the sound. Plz mail me or respond here for more info.

At this time the only development framework is in Perl. In theory, if you can hack object-oriented Perl, you can write Volity modules with only surface-knowledge of how Volity works. The cool part is that you can write multiplayer network games without having to even catch a whiff of the network stuff. You don't even have to know any SVG or ECMAScript... though you'll probably have to help design an appropriate client-side, non-language-specific API for your game.

The point of this exercise is as much a way to quickly refine the development framework as it is to make more games available. Therefore, you'll get as much personal assistance from me as you can stomach.

I'd prefer simpler games right now, as the system design is still quite alpha. By "simple" I probably mean "games simple enough to conceivably play on a text-only console".

Anyone (besdies [livejournal.com profile] spengler, who pointed me at its new Mac OS X beta) play Second Life? The only MMORPG I know of to get a toehold into my local crew is Puzzle Pirates. (Which is also out for Mac, but the basic concept isn't as interesting to me.)

In the interest of market research I've elected to put ten bucks down on a basic membership (it has a 7-day free trial but we both know I'm too lazy to actually cancel before that comes 'round), but can't really use the client, it turns out. It ran horribly on my G4/800MHz PowerBook (which is 200 MHz behind the minimum requirements, I now see), and then wrote more than half a gig of cache files to my hard disk, which I noticed when I completely ran out of disk space. So, uh, I probably won't try the Mac version again soon. I could play the Windows version at work (assuming I have some sort of reasonable graphics card in that PC; I really have no idea) but not when anyone's watching, which rather limits my availablity with it. Hmmmf.
