[livejournal.com profile] doctor_atomic links to an hilarious SNL ad that illustrates the utterly lame approach that mainstream game publishers take when they try to market universally fun things to girls specifically.

[livejournal.com profile] jadelennox discusses a recent XKCD which is, as always, spot-on. (And makes me feel bad that I am invariably too lazy to bother reading the alt text. I'd suggest that the cartoonist needs to do something else with that message, but shoving it in alt text undeniably fits so fell with the strip's general attitude and audience.)

OH MY GOD this is one of those subjects that makes my blood boil. I'm married to a woman who plays games MORE THAN ME. I'm ashamed by the people who talk about "girl gamers" and "games for girls" like they're exceptional, like somehow stepping out of the microscopic fucking niche of angry-man-with-gun games is somehow abnormal. Gah! No wonder the Wii caught these idiots with their pants down.

*cringe* Let me guess: pastel colors and "home maker" kinds of projects.

Speaking as a girl who, with her sister, spent a lot of time playing with Legos, that notion makes me want to curl into a fetal position and weep.
