Any of y'all have any hosting recommendations? It is time to run screaming from CalPOP, who has been rebooting us a lot lately, usually with no explanation. We got rebooted twice this past weekend.

[livejournal.com profile] daerr thinks the machine's ethernet card is failing, but we are pretty sure they are too incompetent or lazy to do anything with this information if we told them. When I call to say that the machine isn't pinging, and suggest they look at the card, their solution is to reboot and forget.

We looked into the Amazon thing, but it's too complicated for our needs right now. We just want a single, RAM-heavy computer somewhere that we can run a Debian server on.

No "friends and family" plans, please. We want to pay for this.

Our machine is back, a tabula rasa, and we're uploading our last backup from Friday night. With luck we'll be back in business in a couple of hours.

I do believe this is the most violent backup-using activity I've ever been involved with. I'm happy that [livejournal.com profile] daerr was as insistent as he was about putting a backup system in place early, last month.

Volity.net is still down. CalPOP can't even be bothered to reinstall a system, 16 hours after saying they would, and three days into our downtime.

It's official: CalPOP sucks. Don't give these guys any business.

Update I just called, and the guy tried to get $75 out of me before he'd reinstall the system. I actually got a little angry at him, and he backed down. He's now saying an ETA of "40, 45 minutes." This is truly unbelievable.

Volity.net is still down. After two days of our computer going down for reasons our hosting provider isn't sure about, followed by a series of technicians not having any idea what to do about it, I asked them to wipe the machine so we can restore from backup. I was told that they could have that done by tomorrow morning, after they do some other stuff for some other people.

[livejournal.com profile] daerr sez I was in my rights to demand it now, since two days of non-service was just unacceptable. I felt bad about not being mean enough. The problem with me is that whenever anyone throws me a bone, no matter how paltry, my instinct is to slink away quickly in a position of subservient gratitude.

Tomorrow morning I'll call and bother some more people. Until then our everything-server is still down. I feel about as productive as I did at Harvard. Fooey.

We'll probably switch providers after we're back online... we had some stupid billing problems earlier this month, and setup problems last month.
