Some days

Thursday was a sick day. Clobbered and miserable. At the end of the day I greeted the returned [livejournal.com profile] classicaljunkie and she gave me Tylenol cold & flu pills, which (after an hour of sleep) snapped me back into sensibility like a light switch. I swear by this product now.

Friday did some contract work for the first time in a while. (This coming week I'm gonna be doing a lot of it, actually.) After that, delivered an HTML snapshot of the web client's table UI (not super-easy to do since it's a slippery DHTML app) to[livejournal.com profile] radiotelescope. He insisted that this demo needs to make a much better first impression than I was preparing, and then volunteered to help make it happen himself. I have no problem with this sort of criticism!

Saturday started to set up the machine that will host jmac.org. After moving over! It's mostly Gameshelf episodes, and I discover that a few seem to exist in duplicate. Well, i can do something about that, at least. Then attended an art salon featureing [livejournal.com profile] cthulhia's paintings, marymary's poetry and C's recorder-playin. It was delightful.

Sunday, more machine setup, and reaching out to prodigal jmac.org users via email to tell em what's up and ask if they'd like to stay. Discovery, via [livejournal.com profile] daerr, of Google's domain-level management apps. I am likely to point jmac.org's MX records at it to let Google handle all my domain's incoming mail. Yeah, I know.

Afternoon meeting with [livejournal.com profile] taskboy3000 about the Gameshelf shoot we're having on Tuesday, including a script read-through. Also, we played MULE again. Trader Joe's dinner with [livejournal.com profile] classicaljunkie, and then we hung out at [livejournal.com profile] dictator555 and Nate's place for a while, drinking their tea while I wrote some new game news segments. It will be a good show.

Ow my head.

Woke up this morning with a terrible headache. Three CVS-brand Excederin-clones and a half-hour nap later it's just barely contained. I think I may have caught it from [livejournal.com profile] dictator555, who was also having similar pain earlier, but are there illnesses whose only symptom is a headache? I don't really get them all that often anymore, and it's not like it's from dehydration. I hope it's not from the exertion of moving my furniture around, for that would be just pathetic.

It takes me a while to get used to some things. Yesterday someone said "Why don't you call your girlfriend and tell her that [etc. etc.]" as a way of delivering some practical short-term advice, but I initially parsed it as sarcasm. That is, I heard girlfriend as "this person you like so much and whom I will now tease you about by calling them your girlfriend (or boyfriend)". It's certainly been used far more often like that to me than it has in any literal way.

Guitar Hero is lots of fun (and it's gotten me back into DDR too, I think) but I still niid a Wii. My desire's only been enflamed since actually getting to play with one. I'm hearing more often of friends finally managing to score systems, so it's only a matter of time.

I wanna work on Gameshelf but my camera's all gunked up and I'm waiting for some cleaning supplies to appear in the mail. At least I hope it's gunked up, coz otherwise I must conclude that the tumble it took a little over a year ago rendered it incapable of stably exporting video, and this would make me very sad.

Did very little since posting yesterday, other than lie on the couch. In the afternoon [livejournal.com profile] dictator555 came over and dropped off some stuff and hung out a little, which was nice.

Had a solid sleep between midnight and 10, and the illness is gone now, though of course I'm mindful that my guts have taken a beating. Just gulped two glasses of Gatorade and more chicken broth.

Going to wash up and go to Kendall, I think. There is a sucky thing afoot in that Dan is asking for a demo of my ITA project, but since I really haven't been putting much time into it lately (esp. very lately, between holidays and sick) that's not a question I can answer now. Will endeavor to turn this into a ocnversation about deadlines or even basic expectations, which really haven't come up at all yet.

After 7 or 8 twice-an-hour visits to Dr. Flushy McBowlface, over which I excavated every last scrap from the half-a-pizza I ate for suppah, I managed to sleep for several hours. Then I hallucinated for several more hours (my illness was a city descending into sectarian violence, my stomach a road to the stars), tried to take a shower, barfed again, and now I feel kind of OK.

I am having a crap time keeping anything down, sadly, even the ginger ale. Some nice hot tea seems like a good idea now (even though it's a diuretic).

Also I ran out of Lysol. Gah.

oh jesus

i just got fuckin food poisoning from Alex Pizza. I think. In a serious serial barf-mode. Poor Zarf had to listen twice, and then I made him get me from stomachey things I remembered from last year's poisoning, back when I had a health care plan with a dial-a-nurse option. (That was from some cheapie Thai place, I can't even remember which now.)

Wish me luck.

Back on my feet, more or less. Up way early coz I slept so much yesterday.

Still no coffee; I don' t think I could stomach it yet. Feeling a little sluggish, but the withdrawal symptoms lasted only one day, which is an interesting bit of self-knowledge, I suppose.

Bad news about the Harvard stuff: due to handwavy union issues of some sort, I can't quit and come back as a contractor, or anyway not without much pain & suffering. So it looks like I'm actually Just Getting Done. Still being allowed to bleed out my vacation time through August and then finish up however I want in September. It's disappointing, but more rescinding the gravy I was offered than making my originally planned situation any worse.

Was made melancholy watching a new episode of "Nova Science Now" dealing with RNAi -- RNA interference, the technique of using cells' natural antiviral hardware to experimentally shut off genes and observe the results. In theory, this could lead to treatments for every disease that involves genetic code getting mangled, which is where all the famous cancers and degenerative diseases live. It's cool stuff, but made me a little sad because it's what I'm walking away from -- this is exactly what ICCB and the Broad are working on (the show even had a Broad researcher among the interviewees).

As I've grumbled about, I wasn't doing science programming... just weenie web-work that was running next to the science. I'm still going to feel a little guilty and regretful every time I learn more about the science, but... for now, best to put my best foot forward and meet my calling.

Recovered

Sort of. I'm going to take it easy with the food coz I don't feel hungry, despite not having eaten (and retained) anything but a bowl of chicken both over the last two days. I take this as a sign to go slow.

About to enjoy another bowl o broth. Mmmm

Most of last night actually saw me concentrating more on staving off a terrible caffeine-withdrawl headache, from going a whole day without coffee. I can't imagine the last time that happened. Was snacking on Excederins, and even chewed on the Jolt gum that [livejournal.com profile] meerkitty happened to give me a while ago. Ironically, when I had enough to achieve equilibrium, I dropped into 8 hours of solid sleep.

Dear internet, I just had a successful pee. Awesome

Also a giant weird bug just got in and Zuby totally ninja'd it.

Things are looking up.

I am suffering from my first known case of probable food poisoning... yaaay.

Did anyone else dine at the Diesel last night? If so, how are you feeling?

Not blaming the cafe, but a cookie from them plus some pirate booty from shaw's is all I et last night. Had a giant Thai noodle lunch, but too long before I started feeling sick for it to be a likely culprit, said the nurse I spoke to.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mrmorse and [livejournal.com profile] kyroraz for meals-on-wheelsing for me. Thanks to Tags for selling me a nice air conditioner a couple of years ago.
